Stem base with most nodular stem scars, roots often hypertrophic spindle or spindle cylindrical, stem twining, sterile or apical flowers, yellow-green or yellow-white, leaves alternate on the main stem and lateral branches, petiole with sparse spines, leaf oval or narrow ovate, margin with wavy blunt serrated teeth, upper green, lower gray-green, flowers single on the branches, alternate with petiole or nearly opposite, corolla. Bit, broadly bell-shaped, lobes triangular, anthers long, seeds mostly ovate, flowering and fruiting in July-October.

In ancient times, Codonopsis pilosula produced in Shangdang area of Shanxi Province was the top grade. It has the effect of Tonifying the middle and qi, invigorating the spleen and lung. Codonopsis pilosula has the functions of enhancing immunity, expanding blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, improving microcirculation and enhancing hematopoietic function.
